Herbal Tea- Is it a Tea?

Print,PDF and Email

Tea is not to be confused with herbal infusions or herbal tea. Herbal teas, also known as tisanes, are caffeine-free beverages that don’t contain any tea. Herbal infusions are packaged like tea, infused like tea, and enjoyed like tea, however the herbs do not come from the Camellia sinensis bush and therefore are not teas. Herbal infusions are made of grasses like lemongrass, barks like cinnamon, fruits like orange peel, flowers like chamomile and hibiscus, and many other botanicals. Do you know for how long these have been around? Herbal teas date back to medieval medicine. Documents dating back to ancient Egypt and China around 1550 BC have mentioned the pleasures and medicinal benefits of herbal tea. The word “tisane” comes from the Greek word ptisane, which is a drink made from pearl barley.
