About us

In India the concept of community radio is quite of a recent origin. Anna FM is India’s first community radio that was launced in 2004. In the north eastern region of India the concept of community radio is still at its budding stage. Krishna Kanta Handiqui State Open University, the only State Open University of the entire north east, took the first initiative to launch the first community radio service of the region. The University aims to provide education beyond barriers to reach the unreached of the society, has launched the first community radio of the north east on 28th of January, 2009 at 90.4 MHz with an experimental broadcasting from Assam Administrative Staff College, Guwahati.

Jnan Taranga initiated community radio service with its launch in 2004 when the idea of community radio was still in its budding stage in North East India. Aimed at establishing a mutual communication with the marginalised sections of the society, Jnan Taranga ( 90.4 MHz) served as a repository of knowledge by sharing useful information on a host of topics like health, career, science, women's welfare, children, agriculture, horticulture etc. The operation of the radio station is voluntarily helmed by Electronic Media Production Centre of the university since its inception with active participation of the members of the centre. It is the first community radio of North East India.

To complement the greater goal of the university that is to disseminate knowledge transcending all barriers of the society, the radio strived to reach out to the under-previledged section who may not have access to formal education . The university decided to utilise radio to communicate with the disadvantaged sections with the belief that education and community users are not mutually exclusive.
