About School

The Bhupen Hazarika School of Mass Communication has been dedicated to the revered memory of the iconic Indian music maestro, Dr. Bhupen Hazarika (1926-2011). This honour is a testament to the University’s earnest commitment to acknowledging his remarkable contributions to the realms of Journalism and Mass Communication. Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, a multifaceted talent hailing from Assam, was not only an Indian playback singer, lyricist, and musician but also a poet, actor, artist, editor, filmmaker, professor, and politician.Fondly known as “Sudha Kontho” (meaning nectar-throated), Dr. Hazarika's songs, predominantly composed and sung in Assamese, resonated with a profound sense of humanity and universal brotherhood. His musical legacy transcended linguistic boundaries, with translations and renditions in various languages, most notably Bengali and Hindi.

For a brief period, Dr. Hazarika worked at All India Radio, Guwahati when he won a scholarship from Columbia University and set sail for New York in 1949. There he earned a PhD (1952) on his thesis “Proposals for Preparing India's Basic Education to use Audio-Visual Techniques in Adult Education.”While in New York, Bhupen Hazarika developed a friendship with Paul Robeson, a prominent civil rights activist, whose influence left an indelible mark on him. Embracing music as an "instrument of social change," Hazarika followed in the footsteps of Paul Robeson, who once conveyed to him the profound sentiment that the guitar is not merely a musical instrument but a “social instrument.” This encounter further fuelled Hazarika's commitment to using his musical prowess as a means to bring about positive societal transformations.

The Bhupen Hazarika School of Mass Communication currently offers a range of UGC-approved academic programmes, including Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and Mass Communication (GJMC), Diploma in Journalism and Mass Communication (DJMC), Post Graduate Diploma in Mass Communication (PGDMC), and Post Graduate Diploma in Broadcast Journalism (PGDBJ). These programmes are thoughtfully designed to cater to the educational needs and preferences of the learners, providing a comprehensive foundation in the dynamic field of Journalism and Mass Communication
