Surya Kumar Bhuyan was one of the doyens of Assamese literature of the flourishing Jonaki Age. The School of Social Sciences of Krishna Kanta Handiqui State Open University has been named after this great litterateur and historian of Assam. Born to Rabilal Bhuyan and Bhubaneshwari Bhuyan of Fauzdaripatty in Nagaon district of Assam in the year 1894, he went on to become a short story writer, prose writer, biographer and historian par excellence. He was the President of the Shillong session of the Axom Sahitya Sabha. He was also a recipient of the Padma Shri Award conferred by the Government of India.
S.K.Bhuyan was a graduate of the Presidency College, Calcutta. He completed his Masters’ Degree from Calcutta University in 1916. In 1918, he was appointed a lecturer in Cotton College, Guwahati. He did his PhD from the London School of Oriental and African Studies. Subsequently, he was appointed as the Principal of Cotton College, Guwahati–the first Assamese to be in that position. His first academic accomplishment was the study of the Buranjis or the chronicles of the Ahom Kings and the other ruling dynasties of Assam. In this pursuit, he was greatly influenced by the works of Sir Edward Gait. He took great pains in collecting historical manuscripts from old families and converting them into a readable format.
He compiled and edited a good number of chronicles. Prominent among those are “KamruparBuranji”, “Deodhai Asam Buranji”, “AsamarPadyaBuranji”, “PadshahBuranji”, “KachariBuranji”, “Konwar Bidroh”, “Mirjumlar Asom Akramon”, to name a few. He penned thirteen biographical books, one poetry collection-“Nirmali”, one short story collection-“Panchami”, one collection of articles written on literature, a good number of books and accounts in English and four books in Bengali.
There are seven disciplines under the Surya Kumar Bhuyan School of Social Sciences which are- Economics, Education, History, Philosophy, Political Science, Sociology and Social Work. The school offers M.Phil., Ph.D., UG and PG programmes along with diploma and certificate programmes.Surya Kumar Bhuyan School of Social Sciences endeavours to conduct research in various areas and always encourages multi-disciplinary research. There are presently 21 faculty members under the school.
