DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY (PhD) PROGRAMME
Course Details
The University offers a Ph.D. programme in compliance with the latest UGC Guidelines and Regulations, conducted in the regular mode. Prospective candidates are required to undergo coursework for at least one semester. The Ph.D. programme has a minimum duration of three years, including the period spent for coursework, and a maximum duration of six years. Admission to the programme is contingent upon performance in a written test and viva. Shortlisted candidates from the written test are expected to present a synopsis of their research proposal before a panel of experts. The entrance test consists of two parts: Part A, comprising 50 marks of multiple-choice questions on research methodology, and Part B, consisting of 50 marks of descriptive type questions. Details regarding the research proposal format and other relevant information are often made available on the university's website.
Eligibility
- To be eligible for admission to the Ph.D. programme, candidates must possess a Master’s degree or an equivalent professional degree, recognised as such by the relevant statutory regulatory body.
- The minimum qualification requires a score of at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade 'B' on the UGC 7-point scale (or an equivalent grade on a different grading system if applicable).
- Alternatively, candidates may hold an equivalent degree from a foreign educational institution accredited by an Assessment and Accreditation Agency. This agency must be approved, recognised, or authorised by an authority established or incorporated under the laws of the home country, or any other statutory authority in that country, tasked with assessing, accrediting, or ensuring quality and standards of educational institutions.
- A relaxation of 5% marks, bringing the eligibility criterion to 50%, is permissible for candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/differently-abled, and other specified categories. This relaxation is in accordance with the UGC's decisions from time to time or for those who obtained their Master’s degree prior to September 19, 1991.
- It's important to note that the eligibility marks of 55% and the relaxation of 5% for specific categories are determined solely based on the qualifying marks, excluding any considerations for grace marks.
- Candidates possessing a degree deemed equivalent to an M.Phil. degree from an Indian institution are eligible for admission to the Ph.D. programme. In case, the degree is obtained from a foreign educational institution, it needs to be approved, recognised, or authorised by the relevant statutory authority in one’s home country.
