Dr. Mrinal Jyoti Goswami is an internationally recognized playwright and Assistant Professor in the Discipline of Assamese at Krishna Kanta Handiqui State Open University. He is widely known for his research-based articles and innovative contributions as a director and designer in theatre. His academic and creative expertise spans Assamese Literature, Literary Theory, Drama, Theatre, Performance Studies and Cultural Studies.
Dr. Goswami is deeply engaged in the research and documentation of Assamese Theatre and the e-jonaki movement of Assamese literature on the web. He was the first writer of a Short History of Assamese Literature published online. His two Assamese e-books, Aytijyar Nirjash and Bhinnaxuree Emuthi Prabandha, are available on Google Books. He also translated the English children’s storybook The Land Where the Sticker Tree Grows into Assamese (Sticker Loga Gaas Gaja Thai), published by the Assam State Biodiversity Board in May 2014.
In 2017, he was invited to present a paper titled A Historical Study of Assamese Theatre in the Light of Theatrology at the International Symposium on Theatre Discipline’s Development, organized by Shanghai Theatre Academy in collaboration with ITI-UNESCO Network for Higher Education in the Performing Arts, held in Shanghai, China.
In 2024, Dr. Goswami participated in the Yongin International Theatre Forum (YITF) in Korea, organized by the Korean Theatre Association, where he presented a paper on Fostering International Theatre Interactions: Lessons from India’s Bhullung-Bhuthur International Theatre Festival. During the forum, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed among nine countries—including India, South Korea, North Macedonia, Bulgaria, Serbia, Turkey, Sri Lanka, Romania, and Tunisia—to form the New World Theatre Network (NWTN), with Dr. Goswami as a core member representing Assam and India.
Dr. Goswami has collaborated extensively with leading theatre personalities from Assam, India, and abroad in various creative roles. He served as a guest faculty at the Regional Government Film and Television Institute, Guwahati (2015–2017), as well as at several colleges and universities across Assam. As an organizing member of the Colombo International Theatre Festival (CITF), he delivered the keynote address titled “Evolution of International Festivals in Assam, India” at the CITF Theatre Forum in August 2024.
His acclaimed plays—Imaan Imaan Paani, Irikoti Mirikoti – The Butterfly Effect, A River’s Tale, Etheror Irika, Tuponi E Ture Kalatalat Ghar, and Eréndira’s Metamorphosis—have been featured at prestigious platforms such as the Colombo International Theatre Festival (Sri Lanka), the International Festival of Theatre in the Sahara (Tunisia), and several national and international theatre festivals.
As Director of AANK_A Creative Line and Festival Director of the Bhullung-Bhuthur International Theatre Festival (BBITF), he continues to foster international collaboration, mentor young artists, and promote performance practices that bridge regional culture with global perspectives.
