World Sanskrit Day 2025 Celebrated at Krishna Kanta Handiqui State Open University
On the occasion of World Sanskrit Day, the Department of Sanskrit under the Padmanath Gohain Baruah School of Humanities, Krishna Kanta Handiqui State Open University, organized a vibrant and intellectually enriching programme on 8th August 2025. The event was held in both offline and online modes, bringing together eminent scholars, professors, researchers, and Sanskrit enthusiasts from across the globe. Celebrated in conjunction with Shravana Purnima and Raksha Bandhan, the programme highlighted the deep connection between language, tradition, and the pursuit of knowledge, creating a rich cultural atmosphere.
The programme began with a devotional and dignified note through the recitation of Manglacharan by Dr. Indrani Deka, Assistant Professor of Sanskrit. She gracefully inaugurated, coordinated, and conducted the entire event with cultural pride and academic dignity, guiding the audience through every segment. The dignitaries, including the Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor of KKHSOU, Prof. Rajendra Prasad Das, were warmly welcomed.
Distinguished participants included Prof. Narada Kush, former Vice-Chancellor of Maharishi Vedic University, Netherlands (joining online from Hungary); Prof. Prosenjit Das, Director of the Padmanath Gohain Baruah School of Humanities; Prof. Suresh Chandra Bora, former Head of the Department of Sanskrit, Cotton College; and Prof. Jagadish Sharma, Professor of Sanskrit, Gauhati University, who was also the Guest Speaker of the day. As a mark of honour, Prof. Prosenjit Das felicitated the Vice-Chancellor and the Guest Speaker with phulam gamosa and saplings, while Dr. Indrani Deka felicitated Prof. Suresh Chandra Bora with a phulam gamosa.
In his inaugural address, the Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor underlined the significance of Sanskrit as a living repository of India’s intellectual, philosophical, scientific, and artistic traditions. He stressed the importance of transmitting Sanskrit knowledge to future generations, highlighting its philosophical depth, scientific structure, and universality. He encouraged the academic community to integrate Sanskrit’s rich heritage with modern research and pedagogy.
Guest Speaker Prof. Jagadish Sharma, a distinguished gold medalist, delivered the keynote on “Liberalism in Sanskrit Literature.” He explained the four cardinal goals of life reflected in Sanskrit literature—Dharma (duty and responsibility), Artha (material needs), Kama (human desires), and Moksha (liberation from the cycle of life and death)—as essential elements of human existence. Quoting from the Mahabharata and the Upanishads, he emphasized renunciation as a supreme value, urging the audience to lead lives grounded in moral responsibility, spiritual enrichment, and social service. His lecture inspired listeners to embrace the ethical and philosophical wisdom embedded in Sanskrit texts.
Following this, Prof. Narada Kush, an internationally respected Vedic astrologer, Ayurvedic consultant, author of The Vedas for Everyone, and advisor for over 25 years, addressed the gathering from Hungary. He shared insights on the universality and timeless wisdom of the Vedas and Sanskrit literature, encouraging the audience to remain deeply rooted in India’s intellectual tradition while contributing to the progress of the modern world.
A major highlight of the event was the release of the book “Exploring the Depths of Indian Knowledge Systems,” jointly edited by Dr. Indrani Deka (Assistant Professor of Sanskrit), Dr. Sanjib Bora (Assistant Professor of Assamese), and Pinku Kalita (Assistant Professor of Sanskrit). The book was formally released by the Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor and the Guest Speaker, with contributions from Prof. Narada Kush as one of the eminent contributors.
In her concluding remarks, Dr. Indrani Deka expressed gratitude to all dignitaries, contributors, and the University’s IT Cell and Multimedia Division for their support. She extended special thanks to Dr. Sanjib Bora for his dedicated effort in designing the cover and final layout of the volume, assuring contributors that copies of the book would soon be dispatched by the publisher. The programme concluded with the chanting of the Shanti Mantra.
This year’s celebration of World Sanskrit Day at KKHSOU marked a unique blend of cultural pride and academic spirit. It reaffirmed the University’s commitment to preserving and promoting the treasures of Sanskrit while inspiring the present generation to engage with its timeless knowledge systems and carry forward its glorious legacy. In this spirit, the University also announced the commencement of a Master’s Degree in Sanskrit Literature for learners completing their undergraduate studies in any discipline.
