Guwahati, 18th November, 2025: Krishna Kanta Handiqui State Open University celebrated the 53rd birthday of Zubeen Garg along with the 15th Foundation Day of Jnan Taranga, the University’s Community Radio Station, on 18th November 2025 at the KKHSOU City Campus, Khanapara, Guwahati. The event began with the plantation programme at 10.30 am. Saplings of Nahar were planted in the University campus led by the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor of the University and also senior most staffs of the University. This was followed by a floral tribute to Zubeen Garg.

The cultural programme was inaugurated by the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Prof. Rajendra Prasad Das. In his address, he highlighted the contribution of Zubeen Garg and his personal admiration for the legendary singer. Following the recent Board of Management’s approval, he also declared that the Auditorium of the University, henceforth, be named after the legendary singer. Prof. Pranjit Bora, Registrar i/c, deliberated on the amazing ability of the singer to blend different music genres in his compositions. He also highlighted the proper use of language, pronunciation in the lyrical compositions of Zubeen Garg. Prof. N. N, Sarma, senior-most faculty of the University spoke on the life of Zubeen Garg, his love for humanity and nature. His selfless nature won him admirers beyond the boundaries of Assam, irrespective of age, caste, creed, religion and community. Dr Sangeeta Kakoty in her speech deliberated on the works of Jnan Taranga and its success in reaching the unreached. A short biopic on the life and achievements of Zubeen Garg was premiered in the event. The EMPC division of KKHSOU along with the organising team, particularly, Dr Sanjib Bora, Assistant Professor (Assamese) took the initiative to produce the Biopic. A few video clippings of the music collection of Mr Vishal Kalita in his residential place was also filmed for the Biopic.

Prof. Pranjit Bora, during his felicitation of Mr Vishal Kalita, the invited guest of the programme, praised his effort to archive the songs of Zubeen Garg though this personal efforts and resources. In the cultural function, the University fraternity displayed the multi-lingual contributions of this legendary singer through song recitals, recitation of his poems, dance on his timeless musical tracks in various languages, like Assamese, Nepali and Bengali. Throughout the programme, the various aspects of the singer like music, his passion for knowledge, his love for nature as well as the humanitarian side was reflected upon through talks and performances. Dr. Bhaskar Sarmah and Dr Sukmaya Lama were the coordinators of the programme.
